The race came alive halfway through the total of 39 laps with six riders breaking away in search of a better-than-usual chance of glory due to the absence of Marianne Vos, who won this race in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Chantal Blaak (AA Drink-Leontien.nl), winner in 2008 and second place for the last three years, fought hard for victory but was ultimately outpaced by Linda Ringlever (NWV Groningen), while Natalie van Gogh (Ibis) took third.
